The Staples: When I Feel like I Have 30 Seconds to Apply Makeup

Hello World! See, I’m posting regularly now! Okay, we’ll see what happens. I couldn’t be bothered to photograph my own staples today, so I pulled photos off of the Internet and mushed them together for the featured photo. Why reinvent the wheel, right?

I had 30 seconds this morning where I felt compelled to apply makeup. Mostly because we had a friend come over who I hadn’t seen in almost 3 years. I would label it a “special occasion”. I acknowledge that makeup is an entirely emotionally-driven process; I wanted to enhance a feature and feel that I enhanced it through the process of applying makeup.

The following is all I manage to slap on regularly. Number 3 only happens about 5% of the time, but I feel it should receive an honourable mention because it’s an amazing product.

I have three “staples”: black eyeliner, black mascara, and primer:

  1. Eyeliner: MAC’s plane Jane Eye Pencil in Ebony. Mine is about 1/3 of its original size, purchased and used since early 2012.
  2. Mascara: L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara is my go-to drugstore brand that never lets me down. If I splurge, Urban Decay’s Perversion takes first place in my books for expensive mascara. There’s also a travel-sized version of Perversion (ha ha), which is probably a better bet since I know no one who actually finishes a whole tube of mascara before it’s time to toss it.
  3. Primer: If I’m applying more than just plain old mascara and eyeliner and want to give my eye makeup some longevity, I’ll rub on a bit of Urban Decay’s Primer Potion to set it. Again, unless you’re a makeup artist and use this stuff all of the time on clients, I recommend the travel version if you’re a moderate makeup wearer like myself.

The minimalist in me is really proud that this is all I wear regularly. Do I get a gold star?
